A warm welcome to newcomers for a walk at Tiger Hill . . .

. . . on Sunday 23rd August 2015.

This will be a relax-and-learn ramble (instead of the usual volunteering action sessions) at a nature reserve between Assington and Wormingford. The friendly and knowledgeable warden, Nick Miller, will guide us and will be focusing on foraging through the year.

We’d love to include anyone interested in learning more about our ‘pop-up’ volunteer gardening, regular wildlife management sessions, or who might want support in adopting a small plot near them.

We will meet up in the Kingfisher Centre car park at just before 10 am to share cars and/or travel in convoy to Tiger Hill. Or you can go directly there, where we’ll start the walk at 10.30 am.

The route from Sudbury via the A134 is turn right to and through Assington village, after half a mile take a left turn onto the Wormingford road and after ¾ mile the track to Tiger Hill reserve is on your right (marked by a small sign). Parking is down the track on the grass verge.  Map ref:  OS Explorer 196  928358

See you at the Kingfisher or at Tiger Hill.

Quay Theatre morning.

How do you fancy coming along and helping the Quay Theatre get rid of some weeds? Join us tomorrow morning, on Friday 17th July, at 9:30am, prepared for a bit of light weeding (gloves, kneelers, etc) and help make a difference. A lovely setting for a bit of idle chit-chat and a great sense of achievement. The ducks will be delighted – but then, they’re quackers!

Volunteering Opportunity at Tiger Hill.

Would you like to help create and maintain a wildlife habitat in wonderful countryside near Sudbury?

Please meet at Kingfisher Leisure Centre flower beds, near the main entrance, at 9.30am tomorrow – that’s Thursday 14 May. From here, we will car share to the site a few miles out of town. Wear suitable outdoor clothes, sturdy shoes/ boots and gloves, and bring secateurs if possible. Remember a hat and sun cream if it’s hot – and bring a large bottle of water as we may be some distance from a tap! You need to have a reasonable level of fitness for this outing.

Welcome to a greener Sudbury.

On June 11, 2013, a small group of volunteers spent a few hours transforming two neglected raised beds – filling them with flowers, plants and edible goodness to entice the butterflies and bees, and delight the people of Sudbury!

Only five weeks later the local bees and butterflies were buzzing happily…

…and the flower beds were thriving.

In February 2014, having enjoyed the project so much, we resolved to spend less time talking and more time ‘doing’. In April 2014, as well as a tidy-up session at the Kingfisher Leisure Centre beds, we began clearing the tubs and beds behind Roy’s Department Store.

The end of May saw the Kingfisher wildflower bed looking spectacular – a real contrast to its former scrub, and dry earth – and drawing lots of compliments from passersby.

Since then, we have painted the tubs and benches behind Roy’s Department Store, pruned some of the shrubs behind the benches, planted a lilac, lily-of-the-valley, and other shrubs, and filled the tubs with bulbs and perennials.

After being included in the tour for the Sudbury in Bloom judges in June 2014, we have continued to maintain the beds, and have begun to make plans for 2015. Join us, if you’d like to come and help make Sudbury greener!
